Brochures
- Provides detailed information of a company or about a product or service marketed by a company
- Brochures contain images and detailed information
- The purpose of a brochure is to encourage the sale of products and may even contain ordering info.
- A sample layout for a three-fold brochure appears below
Note the first page of the brochure (when folded is shown on the right) the two pages on the left (when folded) won't appear when you open the brochure... they will be on the back side

- Note the second page in Word corresponds with the three folded pages that appear when you open the brochure

Newsletters:
- Provide specialized information to a specific audience
- Professional Association (Dentist Association, Teacher Association etc.)
- Demographic Group (Disabled Persons, Kids, Teenagers etc.)
- Special Interest Group (Wakeboarders, Skaters, Peace Activists, Musicians etc.)
- The newsletter is usually distributed yearly, semi/quarter yearly or monthly by an organization
- Newsletters may be free to anyone who subscribes, available only to those who belong to a certain organization or those who pay a small fee to subscribe
- Newsletters don't have a lot of advertising as it is more of an informative piece of writing
- Ads or classifieds may appear at the back thanking sponsors for supporting the newsletter financially
- Newsletters may be sent to a large specific audience that doesn't subscribe or belong to an organization but has managed to get on a mailing list
- Mailing lists of specific people's addresses may be purchased from companies
- How does a company know for example all the people in a city who are likely to go fishing?
- Perhaps a fishing store or a club has sold a list of all it's customers or people going to a fishing website where their address was requested have now made it on the list
Online Newsletters
- A much cheaper way of distributing a newsletter is to mail it out to subscribers on-line in a format such as web page, pdf document or even a Word document
- The disadvantage of this method is that it may not reach the audience (gets stuck in junk mail or overlooked amongst hundreds of other e-mails)
- It was though a few years ago that all newspapers and books, magazines etc. would be distributed electronically by now, however it seems that people still often prefer a hard paper copy of documents
Text Boxes
- Text boxes are useful for moving text around on a page (similiar to moving an image)
- You can change the border or background color of a text box as shown below
Note don't forget to select Format / Text Box / Layout / Tight....so that the information in the columns wraps around it as shown above
Linking Text Boxes
- You can link one text box into another, so that if there is not enough room in one text box the text flows into the other
Example the text in the bottom text box on the left side flows into the text box on the right (similiar to columns except you can move and resize the text boxes wherever you want)

- To link to another text box, select the first text box, then click on the link tool as shown then click on the next text box that you want to link to

- To scroll through the text boxes to see which one comes first use the arrows on the toolbar shown above
Sample Newsletter
A template provided by a Microsoft appears below to help you get an idea of what a newsletter may look like

Note the drop cap function in the menu is not available inside a text box, however you can make always create a seperate text box for the larger capital letter and place it manually
Verticle Text Alignment:
- The text box highlighted below appears vertically (instead of horizontally) by clicking on the verticle alignment tool

Using the Wizard for Brochures and Other Documents:
- You can use the wizard function in Microsoft Word to do some of the initial work in setting up a document, then customize to your own needs.
- There are more templates available at the Microsoft.com website that may also be specific to your needs.
