Microsoft Word 1D: Reports: Headers, Footers, Title Pages, Comments, Track Changes, Leaders

Overview

report

Title Pages :

  • Reports should start with a title page. titlepage
  • The title page does not have a page number on it, and should be centered vertically and horizontally with information such as: report title, your name, course, teacher , , etc.

Footnotes (different than "Footer"): Footnotes appear at the bottom of a page, and give the full details of the source of information that is used in a report.

    • For example, if you are taking information from the Internet for your report you have to provide details of where you got your information.
    • If you do not quote the source of your work you are plagiarizing someone else's work. Rules are strictly enforced in a post-secondary course where you can often be removed from a class or program for plagiarizing someone else's work, or even copying a few sentences from someone else's report that you found on the Internet.
    • Footnotes have a certain format as shown below.

Smith, J. & Cooper, P. (1998). Essential Writing Skills for Students. York Press, Toronto, ON p. 109.

Comments:

  • When an instructor marks a report submitted in Microsoft Word for example in a post-secondary Geography class, the instructor may insert comments about various items in your report.
  • Comments appear in the example below in blue

comment

  • You can also use comments to peer-review each other's work prior to sending in assignments for final grading.

Headings and Table of Contents

  • Reports often are divided into sections making it easier for the reader to focus on various sections as shown below

headings

  • Headings in the report above are created on three levels
    • 1st level heading is centered and bold (Introduction, Overview, Conclusion)
    • 2nd level heading is flush on the left side and bold
    • 3rd level heading is indented .5 on the left side and italic

Proofreading Marks :

  • When an instructor marks a report submitted in Microsoft Word for example in a post-secondary Psychology class, the instructor will correct grammatical and spelling mistakes right in the report.
  • To separate the corrections from the origninal work, proofreading marks are used to distinguish the changes in a red font.

Headers

  • Headers appear at the top of every page (except the title page of a report) and can include items such as date, page #, title of report , , etc.
  • In the example below you can see the header at the top of the page with the title of the report and the page number in the Page X of X format

  • You won't want the headers and footers and footnotes to appear on the title page, your report should numbering at page 2 (although the title page is page 1, there is no header or footer to indicate this on the title page).
