Scheduling Employees :

  • In a part-time or full-time job there may be a schedule posted with everyone's hours for the week posted.
  • If it is a small company you might find everyone's name posted on a handwritten sheet of paper with their hours for each day.
  • In a larger company you might find a handwritten schedule with the names of all employees on a seperate page for each day.
  • You may find schedules that are prepared on a computer.
  • If you create the schedule in a spreadsheet there are many advantages that you will see in the upcoming assignment.
    • When scheduling employees for a restaurant for example, the manager must be careful to schedule enough people to work, however if too many people are scheduled it is an extra expense that will decrease profits for the business.
    • If too few people are scheduled, then customers may recieve poor service and employees may be over stressed and not like working for the company or even quit.
    • It costs the business money when employees quit, as often there is a training period when a new employee is not all that efficient.

Scheduling is a tricky process.

  • Often a manager must guess what times of the day will be the busiest.
    • Some days are busier than others, for example weekends in the case of some restaurants.
  • There are also busy times focused around events like Valentine's day etc.
    • There may also be events held in the city like a hockey game that will bring in a rush of people after the game.
  • Managers look at previous days sales to estimate how busy they anticipate a business will be then estimate the number of employees required.

  • You will be creating an employee work schedule that calculates the number of people per hour and also their wages for the day based on different hourly amounts paid to different people.
  • You will use the spreadsheet to change shifts around in order to effectively save the restaurant money.
    • If someone earns a lower wage you can schedule them for more hours than someone earning a higher wage and thus save the restaurant money.
    • There may be a problem in doing this however as those who earn more may have more experience and be capable of doing a more efficient job.
