

Predicting in Science and Business :
- Scientists and large corporations use statistics to make predictions ( good guesses) about the future based on data.
- For example someone in a science lab may want to predict the amount of water vapour that will come off logs in a lumber mill if the temperature raises by 15 degrees.
- Another example is that a business may want to predict their sales in a foreign country in 5 years from now.
- Sometimes things go up based on a straight line as shown in the example below.

- However sometimes something might increase like a curve as shown below. Bacteria may grow in this manner.

- This assignment will focus on things that seem to grow in a straight line, not a curved line. If something has been appearing to grow in a straight line for many years, for example the amount of pollution in a particular area.
- You can predict what the pollution level will be in 3 or 4 years using a fairly sophisticated mathematical equation.
- Instead of making difficult equations you can use a spreadsheet to calculate the numbers very quickly.
